The short answer
An in-person first consultation at an established US trichology clinic usually costs about $225 to $475, depending on the state, the city and what’s included. Insurance rarely covers it. A video consultation with me, an experienced UK trichologist, costs £150, less than an in-person first visit at the clinics below.
Trichologist prices in different states
| State | Clinic | First consultation |
|---|---|---|
| New York | A Manhattan trichology clinic | $225 for 45 minutes; $475 with a scalp treatment and products |
| California | A Los Angeles trichology clinic | $425 for a full hair and scalp analysis, including a plan and check-ups |
| Texas | A Houston hair loss and trichology clinic | $350 for a full hair and scalp consultation |

A lower-cost option: a video consultation from the UK
Rather than paying big-city clinic prices in New York, Los Angeles or Houston, you can see me by video from home. I’m a consultant trichologist with over 25 years’ experience and a Member of the Institute of Trichologists. A video consultation with me costs £150, paid in pounds sterling, so your bank converts it at the day’s rate.
- Lower cost. £150 for a thorough first assessment, less than an in-person first visit at the clinics above.
- From home. No searching for a trichologist in your area, and no travel.
- Time to talk. We go through your history, health, diet and routine, and look at your photos together.
- A written plan. You receive clear next steps by email afterwards.
It suits you if you have unexplained thinning or shedding, hair changes after pregnancy or around the menopause, an itchy or flaky scalp, breakage, blood test results you’d like explained, or you want a second opinion. Sudden patchy hair loss, or a red, sore scalp with hair loss, needs a dermatologist who can examine you in person.
What affects the cost in the US?
- State and city. New York, California and other big-city clinics are at the top of the range.
- Training and experience. Practitioners with long clinical training and years of experience charge more.
- What’s included. Some fees include microscopy, a scalp treatment, products or check-ups; lab tests are usually separate.
- In person or online. Video consultations usually cost less, without a hands-on examination.
How do I find a good trichologist near me in the US?
Trichology isn’t licensed in the US, so training varies a great deal. Ask where a trichologist trained, how long the course was, which professional body they belong to, and how many years they’ve been in practice. A good trichologist works alongside doctors, and will tell you when you need a dermatologist. What a trichologist does.
If you’re in the US and want a thorough first assessment without big-city clinic prices, a video consultation with me is a good first step.
Questions
Does insurance cover a trichologist in the US?
Usually not. Most insurers treat trichology as outside medical care. If your hair loss is linked to a medical condition, a dermatologist visit may be covered.
Is a trichologist a doctor?
No. Trichologists specialise in hair and scalp health and work alongside doctors. What is a trichologist?
Should I see a trichologist or a dermatologist?
For thinning, shedding, breakage and most scalp problems, a trichologist is a good place to start. For scarring hair loss or anything needing prescription treatment, see a dermatologist.
Is a video consultation with a trichologist cheaper?
Often, yes. A video consultation with me costs £150, less than an in-person first visit at established US clinics, and you don’t have to travel. How video consultations work.
