A thorough look at what’s happening to your hair
Hair loss and scalp problems rarely have a single, obvious cause. A trichologist consultation gives us time to find it: we talk through your history, I examine your hair and scalp closely, and I explain what I think is going on in plain English.
In most cases you’ll have an answer on the day, along with a clear written plan. If further tests are needed, I’ll liaise with your GP to arrange them, or you can have them done privately.
I see women, men, teenagers and children, with any kind of hair loss or scalp condition, from thinning and shedding to alopecia, dandruff and scalp psoriasis. See all hair and scalp conditions.

What happens at your hair loss consultation
About an hour, in my clinic in Forest Row. Nothing is rushed, and there’s time for your questions.
1
We talk
Your hair history, health, medication, diet, stress, family background and how the problem is affecting you. Most of the clues are here.
2
Hair and scalp analysis
I examine your hair and scalp closely, looking at the pattern, density and condition of your hair.
3
Diagnosis and explanation
I explain what I think is causing the problem and what can be done. If tests would help, I’ll liaise with your GP or you can have them done privately.
4
Your written plan
A plan made for you: what to do at home, any products that will help, nutrition advice where relevant, and when to come back.

A close look at your hair and scalp
The examination part of the consultation is to consider the health of your scalp, the speed your hair falls and grows in different areas of the scalp, how the density may differ, and the constitution of your hair shaft.
My years of experience allow me to reach a diagnosis quickly, but sometimes I want to consider two possible diagnoses using my mini dermascope device. It can clarify, in only two conditions, whether the hair loss is progressing or stable.
Together with your history, this detailed hair analysis and scalp check tells me what’s most likely causing the problem and what will help.
Scalp treatments
If it’s right for your condition, I can follow your consultation with scalp treatments, such as steaming and scalp massage. They’re only for patients who have had a consultation with me, and I carry them out myself at a separate location in East Grinstead.
Todd’s Hairdressing, 29 High Street, East Grinstead RH19 3AF
Wednesday, 9am to 5:30pm
After your consultation
- Your written plan sets out what to do at home and why.
- Products, where they help. One cap doesn’t fit all, so any recommendations are chosen for you.
- Further tests, if needed, arranged with your GP or done privately.
- Check-ups to consider your treatment process and support you further.
Preparing for your appointment
A few simple things help me see your hair and scalp as they really are.
- Don’t wash your hair on the day. Ideally wash it 24 to 48 hours before, so I can see your natural oil levels and shedding.
- Skip concealers. Please don’t use dry shampoo, root sprays or hair fibres, as they hide the scalp.
- Bring a list of any medication and supplements you take.
- Bring recent blood test results if you have them.
- Wear your hair as you usually do.
