Is there an NHS trichologist?
When your hair starts falling out or your scalp flares up, your GP is the natural first stop. Sooner or later, many people ask the same question: can I see a trichologist on the NHS?
The honest answer is no. There’s no such thing as an NHS trichologist: trichology sits outside the NHS, so every trichologist appointment in the UK is private. Your GP can still help in important ways, and in some cases refer you to an NHS dermatologist, so it’s worth knowing what each route offers.
This page explains what the NHS can do for hair loss and scalp problems, how a trichologist and a dermatologist differ, and what affects the cost of seeing a trichologist privately.
The short answer
No. Trichology isn’t available on the NHS, and a GP can’t refer you to a trichologist through the NHS.
You don’t need a referral, though. You can book a private appointment with a trichologist directly.
What your GP can do
Seeing your GP is still a good first step, especially if your hair loss is sudden or you feel unwell.
- Check for an underlying cause. Your GP can arrange blood tests, for example for iron, thyroid function and vitamin levels, which can all affect your hair.
- Review your medication. Some medicines can trigger shedding, and your GP can look at alternatives.
- Refer you to a dermatologist for some conditions, such as scarring hair loss or severe alopecia, though NHS waiting lists can be long.
- Treat some scalp conditions, such as psoriasis or seborrhoeic dermatitis, with prescribed treatments.
What the NHS usually can’t offer is time with a hair specialist for common problems like thinning, shedding or pattern hair loss. These are often treated as cosmetic, so there’s little NHS treatment for them. GPs often suggest seeing a trichologist instead, and I’m always happy to work alongside your GP.
Trichologist or dermatologist: which do I need?
They do different jobs, and many people benefit from both. If I think you need a medical opinion or treatment that only a doctor can give, I’ll tell you, and I’ll liaise with your GP.
| NHS dermatologist | Trichologist | |
|---|---|---|
| Who they are | A doctor specialising in skin, hair and nail disease | A specialist in hair and scalp health, trained and registered with the Institute of Trichologists |
| How to see one | GP referral needed | Book directly, no referral needed |
| Waiting time | Often several months | Usually within a couple of weeks |
| Appointment | Usually short, focused on medical diagnosis | About an hour, covering your history, health, diet, lifestyle and a close look at your hair and scalp |
| Best for | Scarring hair loss, severe skin disease, conditions needing prescription medicine | Thinning, shedding, pattern hair loss, breakage and most scalp problems |
Why many people choose to see a trichologist privately
Hair loss can feel isolating, especially if it’s been dismissed as “just cosmetic”. Private trichology gives you time, a clear explanation and a plan.

An unhurried, hour-long appointment, so we can go through everything that might be affecting your hair, rather than a short slot.
No referral, no long wait
You can book directly, usually within a couple of weeks, at a time that suits you.
One person, start to finish
You see me every time, from your first consultation to your check-ups, so I can consider your treatment process and support you further.
Paying privately
Trichologists’ fees vary with the clinic, location and type of appointment. How much a trichologist costs in the UK. With me, the cost depends on:
- The type of appointment: a first consultation takes about an hour, and check-ups are shorter.
- Whether you need scalp treatments, which are arranged separately if they’re right for you.
- Any tests you choose to have done privately, which are paid to the laboratory.
I always explain the fees before you book, so there are no surprises. Send me a message and I’ll let you know.
Will my insurance pay?
Private medical insurance doesn’t usually cover trichology, because most insurers treat hair loss as cosmetic. Some health cash plans and workplace schemes do pay towards it.
