Hair loss conditions
Hair loss has many causes, from genetics and hormones to stress, diet and illness. Some types are temporary and settle once the cause is found; others need longer-term management. Types and causes of hair loss

Scalp conditions
An itchy, flaky or sore scalp is uncomfortable and can affect how your hair grows. Most scalp problems can be calmed and kept under control once you know what you’re dealing with. More about scalp problems

Not sure what’s causing it?

Many hair and scalp conditions look alike, and more than one can happen at once. As a hair and scalp specialist, I take a full history and examine your hair and scalp closely, so we can find the cause rather than guess.
If further tests are needed, I’ll liaise with your GP to arrange them, or you can have them done privately. You leave with a written plan made for you. What happens at a consultation.
When to see your GP first
Please see your GP or call NHS 111 if:
- your hair loss came on suddenly and you feel unwell
- your scalp is very painful, swollen, weeping or bleeding
- you have patches of hair loss with redness or scarring that are spreading quickly
- you think a new medicine may be the cause. Don’t stop it without speaking to your doctor
You can still see me as well. I’ll happily liaise with your GP if further tests are needed.

What conditions does a trichologist treat?
A trichologist specialises in hair and scalp problems: thinning, shedding, patchy and scarring hair loss, breakage, and scalp conditions such as dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis and psoriasis. What a trichologist does.
Is hair loss permanent?
Often not. Shedding caused by stress, illness, diet or hormonal change usually settles once the cause is dealt with. Pattern and scarring hair loss need earlier, longer-term management, which is why it helps to find out which type you have.
Should I see my GP or a trichologist?
You can see either, and you don’t need a GP referral to see me. If you feel unwell, your scalp is very painful, or hair loss is sudden and spreading, please see your GP first.
Do you see children?
Yes. I see children and teenagers with hair loss and scalp problems, with a parent or guardian present. I hold a current DBS check.
