You’ve probably tried the shampoos, the supplements and your GP already.
And you still don’t have a thorough answer. That’s very common, and it’s easy to feel embarrassed or to put it off.
Hair loss and scalp problems are worth taking seriously. Whether it’s thinning, shedding, alopecia, dandruff or a sore, itchy scalp, there is almost always a reason that can be found, and usually something that can be done about it.

What I do, and what I don’t
Anyone can call themselves a trichologist, so I think it matters to be clear about what you can expect from me.
I will
- Listen properly and take a full history
- Examine your scalp with a dermascope
- Liaise with your GP if further tests are needed
- Explain what’s happening in plain English
- Give you a written plan
- Follow up to make sure the plan is working
I won’t
- Promise regrowth or a cure
- Give you one-size-fits-all advice. One cap doesn’t fit all, so all my advice and treatments are bespoke to you
- Rush you. Nothing is hurried

From the Royal Navy to a Sussex clinic
I served in the Royal Navy before joining the Philip Kingsley clinic in Mayfair in 1999. I worked first in its laboratory, then as a clinical assistant, and then as a consulting trichologist. I’ve run my own Sussex practice since 2011.
I treat every consultation individually. No two people are alike, so I don’t believe in standard treatments.

Questions people ask me before booking
If yours isn’t here, send me a message and I’ll get back to you.
What does a trichologist do?
A trichologist specialises in the hair and scalp. I find out why your hair is falling out, thinning or breaking, or why your scalp is itchy or flaky, and give you a plan to manage it. More about trichology.
Do you help with dandruff and other scalp conditions?
Yes. Alongside hair loss, I see people with dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis, folliculitis and itchy or sore scalps. Scalp conditions.
How much does a consultation cost?
It depends on the type of appointment. Send me a message and I’ll explain the fees before you book.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with me. If further tests are needed, I’ll liaise with your GP to arrange them, or you can have them done privately.
Is a trichologist the same as a dermatologist?
No. Dermatologists are doctors who treat all skin conditions. A trichologist specialises only in hair and scalp, and has the time to look at the whole picture: your health, lifestyle, diet and history. What a trichologist does.
Can I see a trichologist on the NHS?
Trichology isn’t available on the NHS, and private medical insurance doesn’t usually cover it, though some plans do. See NHS or private and insurance.
