The short answer

Zinc deficiency can cause hair loss, but it’s uncommon in the UK, and extra zinc won’t help your hair if your levels are normal. Taking too much can do harm, including lowering your copper levels. If you think you might be low, ask your GP for a blood test before taking a supplement.

How does zinc affect hair?

Zinc helps the body make proteins and new cells and repair tissue, all of which hair follicles rely on. A real deficiency can cause shedding from all over the scalp, and hair that’s weaker and more brittle.

Who is more likely to be low in zinc?

  • People with Crohn’s disease, coeliac disease or other gut conditions that affect absorption
  • Vegans and vegetarians, as zinc from plants is less easily absorbed
  • People who drink a lot of alcohol
  • People on very restricted diets, or who have had weight-loss surgery

Should I take zinc for hair loss?

Only if a blood test shows you’re low, and on your GP’s advice. The NHS advises not taking more than 25 mg of zinc supplements a day unless a doctor recommends it. Too much zinc over time can lower copper levels, which can cause anaemia and other problems. Many hair supplements contain zinc, so check the labels if you take more than one.

Foods that contain zinc

Meat, shellfish, dairy foods, bread and cereals, pulses, nuts and seeds. A varied diet gives most people all the zinc, and the other vitamins and minerals hair needs.

If something isn’t right with your hair or scalp, a consultation is where I take your history, examine your hair and scalp closely and give you a written plan.
