The short answer
Sleeping with wet hair now and then won’t harm healthy hair, and it doesn’t cause hair loss. But wet hair stretches and breaks more easily than dry hair, so rubbing on a pillow all night can cause tangles, frizz and breakage, especially if your hair is fine, bleached or long. If you’re prone to dandruff, a damp scalp overnight can make it worse.
Why wet hair is more fragile
Water loosens some of the bonds inside each hair, so it stretches further and snaps more easily. The cuticle, the hair’s protective outer layer, is also more easily roughened. As you move in your sleep, wet strands rub against the pillow and each other, which leads to knots, frizz and, over time, breakage and split ends.
Does sleeping with wet hair affect your scalp?
For most people, no. A damp scalp overnight is harmless. If you have dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis, warmth and moisture can encourage the yeast linked to them, so drying your roots before bed helps.
Is a hair dryer better?
Gentle drying is fine. Very high heat on soaking wet hair can boil the water inside the hair and leave weak, bubbly patches that snap, known as bubble hair. Towel-dry first, use a medium setting, and keep the dryer moving.
How to look after your hair at bedtime
- Wash earlier in the evening, so most of the drying happens before bed.
- Pat and squeeze hair dry with a soft towel or T-shirt rather than rubbing.
- Dry your roots, even if you leave the lengths damp.
- Put long hair in a loose plait, with a soft tie well away from the scalp.
- A silk or satin pillowcase can reduce friction.

Questions
Can sleeping with wet hair cause hair loss?
No. It can make hair break, but it doesn’t make it fall out from the root.
Can sleeping with wet hair give you a cold?
No. Colds are caused by viruses, not by wet hair or a cold head.
Does sleeping with wet hair cause dandruff?
Not on its own, but a warm, damp scalp can make dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis worse if you’re prone to them.
Is it better to sleep with hair up or down?
A loose plait or low, loose bun reduces tangles. Avoid tight ties, which can cause breakage and pulling.
