The short answer

No shampoo can cure hair loss or regrow lost hair: it’s on your scalp for a minute or two before you rinse it away. The best shampoo for hair loss is one that keeps your scalp clean, calm and comfortable, so you can wash often without irritation. Then deal with the cause of the hair loss itself.

What a shampoo can and can’t do

Hair loss starts inside the follicle, driven by genes, hormones, health, nutrition or inflammation. A shampoo can’t change those. What it can do is clean away oil, scale and build-up, calm an itchy or flaky scalp, and leave hair looking fuller. That matters: an inflamed scalp can add to shedding, and clean hair shows less scalp.

Ingredients worth knowing about

IngredientWhat the evidence suggests
KetoconazoleAn antifungal used for dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Small studies suggest it may help a little alongside other treatment for pattern hair loss.
CaffeinePromising in laboratory studies, but good evidence that caffeine shampoo reduces hair loss is limited.
Biotin and vitaminsNo good evidence they work through a shampoo. Your hair can’t absorb them this way.
Sulphate-free formulasGentler for dry or sensitive scalps, but sulphates don’t cause hair loss.

The best shampoo for thinning hair

Look for a light, gentle shampoo that suits daily use and leaves your scalp comfortable. Avoid heavy, moisturising shampoos that weigh fine hair down, and products that promise regrowth. If your scalp is flaky or itchy, the right medicated shampoo matters more than any “thickening” claim. Dandruff · Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Does shampoo cause hair loss?

Not usually. Shampoo doesn’t make healthy hair fall out; the hairs you see when washing were already shedding. The exception is an allergic reaction to an ingredient, which can inflame the scalp. If your scalp stings, burns or turns red after a new product, stop using it.

One cap doesn’t fit all

The right shampoo depends on your scalp, your hair type and the cause of your hair loss, not on what’s trending. At a consultation I examine your scalp and recommend products that suit it, as part of a plan to deal with the cause. Types and causes of hair loss.
