The short answer
Yes, it can. Hair loss is listed as a common side effect of Mounjaro and Wegovy. It’s usually telogen effluvium: shedding from all over the head that starts two to four months after rapid weight loss, rather than a direct effect of the medicine on the follicles. It’s usually temporary, and hair grows back once your weight and eating settle.
Why do weight-loss injections cause hair loss?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide) reduce your appetite, so many people eat much less and lose weight quickly. To the body, that’s a shock, like an illness or a crash diet. It pushes many hairs into the resting stage at once, and they fall out a few months later. Telogen effluvium.
Eating very little can also leave you short of protein, iron or other nutrients your hair needs, which can keep the shedding going.
What does it look like?
- More hair than usual on your brush, pillow and in the shower, from all over the scalp
- Hair that feels thinner, though the scalp rarely shows through in patches
- Starting two to four months after you started losing weight, not straight away
Patches of hair loss, a widening parting or a receding hairline point to a different cause, and are worth having checked.
Will my hair grow back after Mounjaro?
Usually, yes. The follicles aren’t damaged. Shedding tends to settle within six months once your weight steadies, and regrowth follows, though it takes months to show. If the shedding goes on, the weight loss may have uncovered another cause, such as low iron, a thyroid problem or female pattern hair loss.
Should I stop my injections?
Don’t stop or change your medicine without talking to your prescriber. Hair loss from weight loss usually settles on its own. Tell them about it, and ask whether a blood test for iron and other levels would help.

Questions
Does Mounjaro cause hair loss?
It can. Hair loss is a listed side effect, usually shedding a few months after fast weight loss. It’s normally temporary.
When does hair loss start on Mounjaro or Wegovy?
Usually two to four months after you start losing weight, because of the delay in the hair growth cycle.
Does hair loss from Ozempic grow back?
In most people, yes. Once weight loss slows and you’re eating enough, shedding settles and the hair regrows over the following months.
Is hair loss from weight-loss injections permanent?
Rarely. The follicles aren’t damaged. Hair loss that doesn’t settle may have another cause that needs looking into.
