Does hair dye cause hair loss?

Why hair dye rarely causes true hair loss, how to tell breakage from shedding, bleach damage, reactions and when to get help.

The short answer

Hair dye doesn’t usually cause hair loss. Colour works on the hair shaft, not the follicle under the skin that grows the hair. What it can do is weaken the hair so it breaks, especially with bleach, or cause an allergic reaction that makes the scalp sore and itchy. A severe chemical burn can occasionally damage follicles, but that’s rare.

Breakage or hair loss after colouring?

Most “hair loss” after colouring is breakage: hairs snapping along their length. Hair that falls out from the root has a tiny white bulb at the end; broken hairs don’t.

If you notice…It’s most likely
Short, broken, frizzy hairs, often where bleach or foils overlappedBreakage from over-processing
An itchy, red, sore or weeping scalp within hours or days of a dyeAn allergic reaction (contact dermatitis), often to PPD
Blistering, burning or crusting where the product touched the scalpA chemical burn: see your GP
Shedding from the root all over, two to three months laterSomething else, such as telogen effluvium

Does bleach cause hair loss?

Bleach doesn’t stop hair growing, but it’s the harshest colour treatment. Left on too long, overlapped onto hair that’s already lightened, or used on hair that’s already damaged, it can make hair snap close to the scalp, so it looks like hair loss. Hair grows back from the root, though damaged lengths and split ends need to be cut away over time.

When a reaction is urgent

Call 999 or go to A&E if your face, eyes, lips or throat swell, or you find it hard to breathe. See your GP if your scalp blisters, weeps or is very painful. Don’t use the same dye again, and always do a skin test 48 hours before colouring.

If colouring went wrong at a salon

Take photos, keep any broken hair, and note the products used if you can. Most breakage grows out with gentle care and trims. If the damage is serious, I also act as an expert witness in salon claims.

If something isn’t right with your hair or scalp, a consultation is where I take your history, examine your hair and scalp closely and give you a written plan.

Questions

Can hair dye make your hair fall out?

Rarely from the root. Dye can break weakened hair, or cause a reaction that inflames the scalp, but it doesn’t stop follicles growing hair.

Why is my hair falling out after bleaching?

It’s usually breaking rather than falling out. Over-processing weakens the hair so it snaps, often close to the scalp.

Is it safe to dye thinning hair?

Usually, yes. Colour can make thinning less noticeable. Be gentle, avoid overlapping bleach, and do a skin test first.

Does hair dye cause hair loss in men?

No more than in women. Male pattern hair loss is genetic, and dye doesn’t speed it up.
