The short answer
No. Wearing a hat or helmet doesn’t cause hair loss, and it won’t make you go bald. The hairs you find inside are usually ones that were already due to fall out. A very tight hat or helmet worn every day can break hairs or rub the hairline, and heat and sweat underneath can make some scalp conditions worse, but the hair grows back.
Why do I see hair in my hat or helmet?
Everyone sheds around 50 to 100 hairs a day. A hat or helmet collects loose hairs that would otherwise fall in the shower or on your pillow, so it can look like more. It isn’t pulling healthy hairs out from the root.
When a hat or helmet can affect your hair
| If you notice… | What’s happening |
|---|---|
| Short, broken hairs where the band or straps sit | Friction from a tight fit. It breaks the hair, not the follicle, and grows back. |
| Thinning at the hairline or temples, with tight braids or a ponytail under the helmet | Traction alopecia, from the hairstyle more than the helmet |
| An itchy, flaky or greasy scalp after wearing it all day | Seborrhoeic dermatitis, which heat and sweat can make worse |
| Small red or white-headed spots under the helmet | Scalp folliculitis from sweat and rubbing |
Does wearing a hat make you go bald?
No. Male pattern hair loss and its female equivalent are caused by genes and hormones, not by what you wear on your head. Hats are often blamed because people who are thinning tend to wear them more.
Looking after your hair under a helmet
- Make sure it fits: secure, but not pressing or rubbing.
- Wear loose styles underneath, and soft hair ties rather than tight elastics.
- Wash sweaty hair and scalp regularly, and wash any liner or cap.
- Take it off on breaks when it’s safe, to let your scalp cool.
Your safety comes first, so never skip a helmet because of your hair. If you’re losing more hair than usual, the cause of the hair loss is almost always something else, such as stress, illness, low iron or hormones.
If something isn’t right with your hair or scalp, a consultation is where I take your history, examine your hair and scalp closely and give you a written plan.
Questions
Can wearing a cap every day cause hair loss?
No. A cap that fits doesn’t affect the follicles. A very tight one can rub and break hairs at the band, which grow back.
Does a bike or motorbike helmet cause a receding hairline?
No. A receding hairline is usually male pattern hair loss, which is genetic. Tight hairstyles under a helmet can thin the hairline, though.
Do hats stop your scalp breathing?
Your hair follicles get oxygen from your blood, not the air, so a hat doesn’t starve them. Heat and sweat can irritate the scalp, though.
Why is my scalp sore after wearing a helmet?
Usually pressure from a tight fit, or irritation from heat and sweat. If it stays sore, itchy or spotty, have it checked.
